First I want to say a quick prayer.... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person listening to this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words, that you open up our ears, our mind, and our heart to you Lord. I pray that through every aspect of our lives that you guide us, show us truth, and help us to discern that truth. Lord please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and wisdom to be able to implement it in our daily lives and be able to make an impact in other people's lives. I love you with my whole heart Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Acts Chapter 13 Part 2:
26 "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
32 "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm"
" 'You are my son;
today I have become your Father.'
34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words:
" 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.'
35 So it is stated elsewhere:
" 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'
36 For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 "Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you cannot be justified from by the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you"
41 " 'Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you will never believe,
even if someone told you."
In verses 26-30 Paul was telling the brothers and children of Abraham and the God-fearing Gentiles that the message of salvation has been sent to them. He said that the people of Jerusalem and their rulers didn't recognize Jesus and they crucified him. All of the things that happened fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Every Sunday in those synagogues those words of the prophets are read. And that's the words that were fulfilled whenever these Jewish leaders and rulers didn't recognize Jesus, they hated him, they sought to persecute him, and they crucified him. In verse 30 we see that God raised Jesus from the dead and for many days he was seen by the disciples and the people that had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Those disciples, or now apostles, were witnesses and they could testify about Jesus and all of the things that had happened.
In verses 32-33 Paul says that what God promised their fathers he has fulfilled for their children by raising up Jesus Christ. Then he says a verse from Psalm 2:7. The verse that Paul says here in verse 34 is from Isaiah 55:3. Then in verse 35, the verse that Paul says here is from Psalm 16:10. So we see in these verses in 32-35 that whenever God had raised up Jesus Christ he fulfilled that he had become our Father because whenever we believe in Jesus Christ, we're saved, and we have the Holy Spirit within us, then we have eternal life and we are children of God. Also whenever God the Father raised Jesus from the dead Jesus didn't ever see decay. Jesus' body was preserved and he was raised three days later by God the Father so his body didn't see any decay. In verse 36, whenever David had served God's purpose he fell asleep. He was buried and his body did decay because he was a mere human. But Jesus is the Son of God, Jesus is our Savior, and after his mission was completed on this earth he went back up to heaven to sit on the throne at the right hand of God the Father.
Then in verses 38-41 Paul tells these people that through Jesus the forgiveness of their sins is proclaimed. So they can be forgiven they just have to ask Jesus for that forgiveness. And through Jesus anyone who believes in Jesus is justified by everything that they couldn't be justified from the law of Moses. There were so many things in the law of Moses that these people just kept messing up on it and they just couldn't keep the law, and Paul is saying here that through Jesus and the forgiveness of our sins that all our sins are forgiven and everything is justified. We just have to believe in Jesus Christ, ask for that forgiveness, follow him, truly change our ways, and let the holy spirit guide us. In verse 40 Paul warned them not to let what the prophets have said happen to them. The scripture that he says from verse 41 is in Habakkuk 1:5.
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
" 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' "
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Alright so those are all the verses of chapter 13 of the book of Acts, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. In verses 42-43 the people had invited Paul and Barnabas to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath, many of the Jews and converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas after the congregation was dismissed, and they talked with them and they urged them to continue in the grace of God. Then in verses 44-48, almost the whole city had gathered together to hear the word of the Lord from Paul and Barnabas on that next Sabbath. The Jews were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against Paul whenever they saw these huge crowds that were there to hear the word of the Lord. In verses 46-47 Paul and Barnabas told these Jews that they spoke the word of God to them first, but since they didn't accept the word of God and they didn't consider themselves worthy of eternal life, then they turned to the Gentiles because the Lord had commanded them to be a light to the Gentiles and bring salvation to all the people. These Jews had hatred in their hearts, they were stubborn, they were set in their wicked ways, and they rejected the word of God. So Paul and Barnabas started spreading the word of God to the Gentiles and the Gentiles started believing. And we've seen all of this happening throughout this Bible study in all of the previous chapters of the book of Acts. In verse 48, when the Gentiles heard what Paul and Barnabas had said they were glad, they honored the word of the Lord, and the people that believed in Jesus Christ were appointed to eternal life.
So in verses 49-52 the word of the Lord spread through the whole region, but the Jews had stirred up the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men in the city. They stirred up this persecution against Paul and Barnabas so they were kicked out from the region. So because of the jealousy and the wickedness of these Jews they got other people to want to persecute Paul and Barnabas and they got them out of their region. In verse 51 we see that Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and they went to Iconium. And about what it says here in verse 51, I just want to go into the book of Mark real quick in chapter 6 verse 11. Jesus tells his disciples, "And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them." So that's what happened here. These people in this region didn't welcome Paul and Barnabas and they didn't accept what they had to say so they shook the dust from their feet to testify against them.
Then we see in verse 52 that the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. They were guided by the Holy Spirit and they had joy knowing that they have eternal life in Jesus Christ and that whenever they are guided by the Holy Spirit they will never be led astray. There were many people that believed, but the people that weren't meant to believe didn't believe, and Paul and Barnabas didn't let that bother them. They just shook the dust off their feet and went about their way spreading the gospel to people that wanted to hear it, that would accept the words of God, and receive Jesus Christ into their hearts.
