Here is a teaching on part 1 of chapter 5 of the book of Luke. If you want to check out previous Bible studies and chapters going forward, join our group here. Once you get added into that Facebook group, you can go to the "units" tab and you'll see all of the chapters and their study guides as they are being taught.

First I want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please open up our eyes to see the truth of your words and please help us to know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. Lord, Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and they implement it in their daily life. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Luke Chapter 5 Part 1:

1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2 he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Alright, so these are all the verses that I'm going to read in part 1 of Chapter 5 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss all of these verses with you guys here. So in verse 1 where it says Lake Gennesaret, that is the Sea of Galilee. In verses 2-3, Jesus saw two boats at the water's edge that were left by the fishermen who were washing their nets. So Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon and he asked him to put out a little from shore and taught the people from the boat. With Simon's response in verse 5, they had been fishing all night long and they hadn't caught anything. Simon didn't just fish for fun he was a fisherman, this was his job. He and the other fishermen that were with him had put in hard work all night to try and catch these fish and they didn't catch any. So he thought that it was kind of redundant to try and catch more fish but he said he would let down the nets because Jesus said so. In verses 6-7, this just goes to show that the Lord always provides whenever we do what he tells us to do.

In verse 8, this is the first time that we see here in Luke where it says Simon Peter instead of just Simon. In our Bible study that we went over in chapter 1 of the book of John, we saw where Jesus had called Simon Peter. So I'm just going to go into verse 42 of chapter 1 of the book of John real quick and it says: And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). So here we see where Simon got the name Peter. So sometimes it says Simon in here, sometimes it says Simon Peter, and sometimes it just says Peter but it's all the same person. So in verse 8, when Simon saw the power of Jesus it made him realize how poor of spirit he was in comparison to Jesus. So he told him to go away from him because he was a sinful man. In verses 9-10, Simon and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken. They were fishermen and they knew what a miracle this was that all these fish had been caught when they had spent all night working and hadn't caught any fish. In verse 10, Jesus told Simon to stop being afraid and from now on, he would catch men, like him. Jesus had disciples and they followed him, and he was telling Simon Peter that we would also catch men and tell them about the good news of Jesus Christ and that he would be his disciple and all that.

In verse 11, where it says "they left everything and followed him," these men knew the importance of leaving everything behind and following Jesus. They knew he was the Christ. They knew there was something special about him, he was performing these miraculous signs, he had this great power and authority, and they knew that it was so important to just follow him and just leave everything behind and trust him. That is what we have to do as Jesus' disciples. We have to leave everything, all of the things from the past, the things that we hold on to so dearly, and just follow Jesus. Whenever we are saved by Jesus, we are dead in our sins and alive in him. Our lives are no longer ours, they belong to Jesus and we have to do what the Lord commands us to do, follow him, seek to live and have a heart like him, and let the Holy Spirit guide us.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. Jesus always provides when we do what he says

2. Jesus has great power

- We saw this in this Bible study, and we will continue to see this in our Bible studies in the book of Luke, the power of Jesus Christ.

3. We have to drop everything and follow Jesus

Luke Ch 5 Part 1 Study Guide

  1. What happens when we do what Jesus tells us to do?

  2. In verse 8, why did Simon Peter say this to Jesus?

  3. What did Jesus mean when he told Simon that he would catch men?

  4. What should we do as Jesus’ disciples?

  5. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

So that concludes this Bible study on part 1 of chapter 5 of the Book of Luke. Tomorrow we're going to go into part 2, so make sure you stay tuned for that.

I love you guys so much.
