Have you been struggling with temptation?
Been having these thoughts racing through your mind telling you to do things that you know you shouldn't be doing?
Do you feel like you've been battling your own thoughts?
Trust me, I get it.
I have to consciously make a decision every day to resist temptation with certain things, that I discuss in this week's podcast episode. Some days are harder than others but it has been a constant battle in mind.
Christians face daily struggles that hardly anyone knows about. A lot of us don't talk about our daily struggles because there is a misconception that when we are saved, we shouldn't have the same struggles that non-believers have because we have the Holy Spirit within us. But, we all are human beings and we all struggle.
Here are some Bible verses about temptation:
1 "For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness."
6 "Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel."
11 "These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
- 1 Corinthians 10: 1-13
These verses are super powerful and they let us know that we all face temptation, but God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. He will also always provide a way out, we just have to lean on Him and not our own understanding.
I have been implementing 5 steps that really help me when trying to resist temptation. I wanted to share these steps with you because I know they will help you too.
THE 5 STEPS TO HELP YOU RESIST TEMPTATION ARE:
1. Recognize when you are being tempted
- Whether it's a thought or not, recognize and acknowledge that you are being tempted.
2. Pray
- As soon as I recognize that I am being tempted, I start praying immediately after.
- Pray for strength and courage to be able to resist temptation.
- If you are really struggling and can't seem to come up with the words to pray, just say "Lord, please help me." He knows our thoughts and exactly what we need at that moment.
3. Think about what would happen if you gave in to those temptations
- List what the consequences would be.
- Or you can just think for a minute of what would happen.
4. Repent
- Even though you haven't given in to the temptation, repenting will help you not to.
- If I ever have a thought of being tempted and I don't repent for it, it will eat me up inside. Our thoughts are super powerful.
- I will also repent for the times that I did give in to temptation,
5. Know there is always a way out
- God will always provide a way out, you just have to lean on him.
- Lean on God for understanding and to show you the way out.
Anytime you start struggling with temptation, implement these 5 steps. I'm sure they will help you, just like they've helped me.
I'm praying for you.... I pray for strength and courage for each and every one of you, that you will be able to resist temptation. I pray that you have peace knowing that God is in complete control and Faith that his will be done. I pray that you know that there is always a way out and God will provide it as long as you lean on him to guide you through it. In Jesus's name, Amen.
I love you guys so much.
Never forget to choose faith over fear.
