John's Letter to the Chosen Lady and Her Children. Bible Study. 2 John

Here is a teaching on the book of 2 John. If you want to check out previous Bible studies and chapters from now on, join our group here. Once you get added to that Facebook group, you can go to the "units" tab and see all the chapters and their study guides as they are being taught.

I did want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every person reading this right now. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we are reading and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives. Holy Spirit please guide us and help us to see the truth, know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and implement it in their daily lives. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

2 John:

1 The elder,

To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth— 2 because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:

3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Alright, so I am going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. So in verse 1, it seems that John wrote this letter for a Christian woman and her children that he wanted to encourage and warn. This also could've been a symbolic way to address a particular congregation, so maybe a local church or group of church-goers. It doesn't specifically say here, it just says "the chosen lady and her children." Whoever this lady was; she was loved by everyone who knew the truth. In verse 2, there are a couple of things that I want to talk about with "the truth" here. First, we know that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Also, the truth can be the truth about God's words, the truth about the gospel of Christ, and just the truth in general. There are so many people in this world that will try to deceive us, deny Jesus, and tell us different things that we know are not the truth. Whenever we are staying in a constant relationship with Christ, we are praying, reading, and studying our Bible, and we are letting the Holy Spirit guide us, we will know the truth and we can walk in that truth. The truth never changes, it will be with us forever.

In verses 4-6, John rejoiced because when people are walking in the truth they are also following God's commands. As we saw in our Bible study from 1 John chapter 2, this command to love others as Jesus loves us is one they have heard their whole Christian lives. Whenever we follow God, we worship Him, pray to Him, and obey His commands, then we show our love to Him. We have to love and serve others and radiate our love through every aspect of our lives.

7 Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11 Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.

12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your chosen sister send their greetings.

Alright, those are all of the verses of the book of 2 John, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. In verses 7-11, there are many people in this world that will try to deceive us and make us question the truth. Those people are not from God but they are from the devil. We have to stand firm in our faith and know that our true treasure and reward is eternal life in heaven with Jesus and God the Father. If someone runs away from the teachings of Jesus, they give into the deceptions of the world, and they just live their life full of sin, then they don't have God. Those that follow Jesus and seek to live and have a heart like him have both God the Father and God the Son (Jesus Christ).

In verses 10-11, John is warning this woman and her children to not welcome anyone in her house that denies Jesus or tries to teach a false gospel. This doesn't specifically have to mean her house, like where she lives, this could mean the house of believers (the Church). So anyone that denies Jesus, teaches a false gospel, and tries to deceive others is not welcome. We have to stand firm in our faith and not accept things that are wicked or entertain those who are wicked. We have to let everyone know about the truth of God's words, stand firm in our faith, and not let anyone that we know or care about be deceived by these false teachings and these wicked people. In verse 12, John wanted to say much more to this woman and her children but he preferred to speak face to face, so he hoped to see her face to face and be able to speak more to her about everything.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. The truth never changes and will be with us forever

2. We have to obey God's command and love others

3. We have to stand firm and not let false teachers deceive us

2 John Study Guide

  1. What are 2 things that we know about truth?

  2. How can we show our love to God?

  3. Where is our true treasure? Why?

  4. Should we entertain wicked people? Why or why not?

  5. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

So that concludes this Bible study on the Book of 2 John. Next time we're going to go into 3 John so make sure that you stay tuned for that.

I love you guys so much.
