First I want to say a quick prayer..... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words. I pray that you give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and how to implement it in our daily life. I pray that you use us as a vessel for your work and work through us to make an impact in other people's lives. And I pray that in every aspect of our life that you lead, guide, direct us, and give us strength and peace and fill us with your love every single day. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.

John Chapter 12 Part 2:

20 "Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with the request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." 22 Philip went to tell Andrew: Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the son of man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My father will honor the one who serves me.

27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. 30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die."

I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. So in verse 23 Jesus predicted his death. He knew once Andrew and Phillip came to him about the Greeks that wanted to see him that his hour had come for him to be crucified. Then what Jesus says in verse 24, the illustration of seeds are his disciples that will continue to spread the gospel and be submitted to God's will even after Jesus returns to heaven.

Alright so I want to say a couple of things about verse 25 when he says "The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life." We as disciples of Jesus Christ are not of this world and our true happiness doesn't come from this world or the worldly things. We're not always accepted in this world because of the corruption in this world. Whenever we're truly following Jesus and we're seeking to be disciples of Jesus Christ every single day, we're going to have hardships, this life is not going to be easy, and we're just going to be waiting for the time when we can go to heaven and see God's glory. The people that are disciples of Jesus Christ that know that we're not from this world, we're going to have eternal life because we believe in Jesus Chris and we know that our time on earth is just temporary. So we don't get consumed with worldly things, pride, materialistic possessions and all of that. The people that do love their life on earth, they pride their self with their possessions and they love the worldly things. They won't have eternal life because they have hate in their heart, they don't believe in Jesus Christ, and they're full of corruption.

Now verse 27, Jesus was fully man and fully God and he was on a mission to save the world and to die on the cross to forgive us of our sins, but his heart was troubled because he knew his death would be near. He was fully man, but he was also fully submitted to the will of God the Father and he knew that that was the plan all along. Then in verses 28-30, the voice of God the Father that came from heaven was so that the people may believe. It wasn't for Jesus because he knew that God the Father was right there and he was fully submitted to His will. So this voice wasn't for Jesus, it was for the people.

Then in verses 31-32, Jesus was showing the kind of death that he was going to die. He would be lifted up on the cross at the time of his crucifixion. We also read in our Bible study on John chapter 8 in verse 28. It said, "So Jesus said, 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just as the Father has taught me.'" So even in John chapter 8 Jesus was talking about his crucifixion and how the Son of Man would be lifted up (which Jesus is the Son of Man.)

34 "The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them."

Alright, so on verse 34 the crowd didn't understand what Jesus was saying. They knew from the Old Testament that the Christ would remain forever so they didn't understand who the Son of Man was and how Jesus said "The Son of Man must be lifted up." Then what he said in verses 35-36 when Jesus was talking about the light, he was speaking of himself. Just like we read in John chapter 3, which I'm going to read these verses really quick with you guys:

"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." -John 3:19-21:

The light of the world is Jesus Christ and he would be going back to heaven soon. So what he said in verses 35- 36 of chapter 12 of John, he was saying this because he knew that he was going to be going back to heaven soon. So it was important for them to follow Jesus and believe in him while he was still on earth so that they may become his disciples and spread love and light after he goes back to heaven.

37 "Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet" "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they will not confess their faith for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God."

So here in verse 38 the word from Isaiah the prophet, we see that verse in Isaiah 53:1. Then again where it says that Isaiah said elsewhere, that was from Isaiah 6:10. So the reason why a lot of these Jews wouldn't believe in Jesus was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, but there were still a lot of people, even some of the religious leaders that put their faith in Jesus. But they still wouldn't confess their faith because they were afraid they would be put out of the synagogue.

In verse 43, this just goes to show that pride was their problem. They loved praise for men more than praise from God. Pride is a big problem today and it was also a big problem in those days. They would rather keep their mouth shut about Jesus than lose the praise and approval of men. Even though they would be earning acceptance from God and praise from God, which is so much better than any praise from men ever.

44 "Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me shall stay in darkness. 47 As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."

Those were the last verses of this Bible study, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So what he says in verse 44, you can't believe in God the Son (which is Jesus Christ) without also believing in God the Father and vice versa. Then in verse 46; truth, light and eternal life is achieved only through Jesus Christ when he forgives us of our sins and comes into our heart. The darkness that he's speaking of his sin. So whenever we ask him into our heart to forgive us of our sins, we no longer live in darkness but in light. We have to spread that love and light to others so that they may also believe in him, become his disciples, and that they go to heaven when it's their time to go. In verse 48 where he talks about the last day, this is the second resurrection. When Jesus comes back to take his people to heaven him with him. Then in verses 49-50, Jesus is again showing that he's fully submitted to the will of God the Father and his crucifixion and resurrection leads to eternal life for the believers of Jesus Christ.

John Ch 12 Part 2 Study Guide

1. Why did Jesus use the illustration of the kernel of wheat in verse 24?

2. Why was Jesus’s heart troubled?

3. In verse 35, what is the light that Jesus is speaking of?

4. Based on our Bible Study, what is one big problem that we see in the world today and also in those days?

5. What did Jesus come into the world to do?

6. What is the darkness that Jesus is referring to?

7. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible Study?

Alright, so that concludes our Bible study on John chapter 12. I know with this Bible study, the things on here are pretty heavy. In this chapter and the ones ahead, he's getting close to his crucifixion. I want you to really reflect and think on how you have been spreading love and light to others. It's so important when we're disciples of Jesus Christ and we're following him to make sure that we let everyone that we know and love know about him and how amazing he is. How he died on the cross for our sins to forgive us of our sins, raised three days later, and all of the things that he had to go through leading up to that. So I want you to really reflect and think on how you've been spreading the gospel and love and light to others, because that is so important during your walk with Jesus Christ. It's so important to spread the gospel so that everyone you know and love may be saved and also become disciples of Jesus Christ so when it's their time to go they'll be going to heaven also.

In next week's Bible study we're going to be going into chapter 13 of the book of John, so stay tuned for that.
