I never thought of myself as a people pleaser, but I realized throughout this past year or so that I actually was.
Once you get so used to trying to please people all the time, It's really hard to get out of that. There are times that I still catch myself before I make a post, or do a story, or anything like that, thinking, "what are other people going to think about this?" Or, "should I really do that? Like, I think I've posted about God enough, should I really make another post about him?" Then I think to myself "Yes Lorena, you should. Why wouldn't you do that?"
If it wasn't for God helping me, working through me, and doing all of these amazing things for me in the past couple of years, I would still be stuck in a deep depression with tons of anxiety and not want to do anything. And If I was to let the opinions of other people control my life, I would still be stuck in that same situation of just being depressed and anxious because I would feel like I couldn't be my true self and let other people know what I'm truly feeling and thinking.
"Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."
- Galatians 1:10
This verse right here says it all. You can't please the world and also please God. Especially with the way the world is today; It's so evil and corrupted. If we're trying to people please all the time, then we're going to be straying so far away from our God led calling, from the purpose that God has for us, and from doing what's commanded of us, because we're constantly trying to do what the world wants or what other people in our life want instead of what God wants us to do.
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." -Romans 12:2
So in this verse, it's basically saying to not behave according to what's socially acceptable or of this world, but to be transformed by the renewal of your mind with scripture, with knowing the truth of God's word, praying, and getting that knowledge from God. Then and only then will you be able to distinguish what is the will of God, what's good, what's acceptable and what's perfect.
As Christians, we want to follow God and do what's commanded of us, regardless of what everybody else is doing. The normalcy of this world is to be corrupt and evil and to do things that are not okay in the eyes of the Lord. We can't let what other people think about what we're doing, or what other people think is right, affect what we know in our heart is right, and what we should be doing.
When I first started to have a very close relationship with God about a year ago, I refrained a lot from posting about it on social media and from even doing my podcast. I had a calling on my heart to do my podcast about a year ago and I ended up not starting it until November because I was so worried about what people would think about me. I was so worried that people would think that I had changed. I was afraid that I would lose people on social media or people that I had become close with (which did happen,) but change is not a bad thing, and losing people that can't see eye to eye with you, is not always a bad thing either.
With praying, reading the Bible, studying the Bible, and really having that relationship with God, I had to learn that if I want to do what is right, follow the Lord, spread the gospel and let other people know about God, that I'm going to have to stop being a people pleaser. I'm going to have to stop worrying about what other people think of me, or if they get tired of seeing posts or different things about God on my social media. At the end of the day, if we're not spreading the gospel or not letting other people know about God and the truth about God's word, and trying to get other people saved and to go to heaven, then what are we really doing with our lives? If I lose a hundred people because of me spreading the word, doing what is commanded of me, and following through with my God led calling and I can touch one person, help them to get saved, help them to know about God and have a relationship with him, then it's all worth it.
I'm on here today talking to you guys about this because I know there's someone listening to this and it's probably you right now, you are a people pleaser or you're a recovering people pleaser. You've been trying really hard to not be a people pleaser, but it's something that's always going to be in the back of your head. When you're trying to do something new, something different, something that other people may not agree with, it's always going to be in the back of your head to not do that or to try and filter yourself, or only do things that are socially acceptable because you don't want people to judge you or feel any type of way about you.
I just want to let you know right now, in order for us to grow, in order for us to fulfill the calling that God has placed in hearts, and do what's commanded of us, we're going to have to stop people-pleasing. There's going to be so many things that you're going to do in your life that's not going to be socially acceptable. If you're following the ways of the Lord, people are going to judge you. People are going to think you've changed, and people may unfriend you, or not want to have anything to do with you, and that's fine.
You have to stay firm in your faith and stay focused on the bigger purpose. Focus on spreading the gospel, reading your Bible, having that relationship with God, letting other people know about God and the truth about God's word and helping them when it's their time to go, to be able to go to heaven and see God's glory. You can't let other people's opinions control your life and stop you from doing your God led calling.
If you need help on identifying and eliminating your limiting beliefs to be able to go through with your God led calling, I also have an episode on that. If you want to go check that out, it's episode number 29. In that episode, I go step by step with how to identify eliminate your limiting beliefs to be able to take that leap of faith, and do what your God led calling is and step into that.
So here are some takeaways from this blog that I want you guys to really understand:
1. The only opinion that ever will matter in our life is the opinion of God
-The way that we can get his opinion and know what is just, and what is right is by reading our Bible, studying the scripture, praying to him, and having that relationship with him.
2. A lot of the things that are so socially acceptable in this world are not things that are acceptable in the eyes of the Lord.
- We have to not be conformed by the world, the worldly things, and worried about what's acceptable in this world; we have to renew our mind and our heart by having that relationship with God, praying, studying our Bible, really knowing the truth of the word and fulfilling the purpose and the calling that he's placed on our heart.
3. Anytime you start to doubt yourself or the things that you're doing that you know you've been called to do by the Lord, pray to Him, read your Bible, and stop being distracted by the worldly things.
- Focus on your relationship with God and the wisdom and knowledge that he is giving you.
- If you need to unfollow some people on social media to help you with that, or whatever it is that you need to do, you have to stay focused and stand firm in your faith and focus on the bigger purpose that he has for you.
These are the three things that I've really been taking into consideration while I've been fulfilling the purpose that God has for me and doing my God led calling and it's really been helping me. I hope this helps you guys also.
I'm just going to say a quick prayer before I let you go... Lord, I pray that you are with every single person reading this right now, Lord. I pray that you open up their hearts, their spirit, their mind, their body, their eyes, and their ears to you, Lord. I pray that they stop letting the opinions of other people control their lives and that they focus on you, their relationship with you, prayer, scripture, spreading the gospel, and letting other people know about you and the truth about your word. I pray that they stop being conformed by this world and doing what's socially acceptable and they only focus on you and let you guide them every step of the way. I love you so much, Lord. In Jesus's name, Amen.
I love you guys so much.
