Discipline is doing the things that you know you need to do to get the results that you want, even when you don’t feel like doing it.
Let‘s talk about discipline for a minute...
There are various definitions for the word Discipline but the definition that best describes it in the context I am speaking of is “ to train oneself to do something in a controlled and habitual way.” Discipline is doing the things that you know you need to do to get the results that you want, even when you don’t feel like doing it.
Some of the things that I had to discipline myself on the past couple of days are:
- Drinking a gallon of water yesterday
- Taking a walk in the dark last night
- Taking a walk this morning
Why were these things so important? I had set a goal on Wednesday that is week (from Wednesday to next Wednesday) I would drink a gallon of water a day, eat 4 times a day (2 snacks and 2 meals,) and walk at least 5 times this week.
Wednesday I had a totally off day and didn’t reach any of my goals for the day. Now I could've easily just said “oh, I’ll just try again next week since I already messed up,” but instead I said to myself “for the next 6 days I will do all the things I need to do to reach those goals.” And that is exactly what I’ve been doing.
Yesterday I peed a million times and it was so annoying but I did not stop drinking until I hit 128 oz (1 gallon.) I also went walking yesterday into the dark (something I would never do before). I finished cooking dinner later than expected so by the time I went on a walk the sun had already set and it got dark halfway through my walk. But I was not going to miss my walk yesterday, so I did it anyway.
Today I woke up and was doing my normal routine and I came across a podcast about discipline and as I was listening to it I put my shoes on and walked out the door and went for a walk. At that moment of listening to that podcast and hearing her say “Discipline is doing the things that you need to do, even when you don’t feel like doing it,” something just clicked and I knew right then I needed to walk so I wouldn’t have to stress over it all day.
When you set goals, the only thing that is going to stop you from achieving those goals is yourself and your lack of discipline. You have to do the things that you need to do, no matter how you feel. On the other hand, if you don’t get it done that day; if you’re just having a really off day, or you are sick, or something happens, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just commit to it again and do better tomorrow.
One big part about learning discipline is making progress. No one is perfect and never will be. But if you keep progressing and working towards your goals, you will accomplish them. 🙌🏻😊
Before you go, I will leave you with this prayer... I pray that God gives you the strength to do the things you need to do tonight, even if you don’t feel like doing them. I also pray that he gives you the courage and consistency to always work towards fulfilling the purpose that he has for you. In Jesus name, Amen.
Never forget to choose faith over fear.
